Layered over this is a more volatile information environment, where incomplete or misleading claims about data centres – particularly around environmental impact – can spread quickly and shape community sentiment before facts are fully understood.

But it will also test how well proponents can align national ambition with local expectation – and how effectively they can navigate an environment where perception can move faster than fact.
Engagement, done well, is not a risk mitigation exercise. It is a strategic lever. It shapes approvals, timelines and ultimately the reputation of both the project and the organisations behind it. As AI continues to scale, the question is no longer whether we build the infrastructure to support it but how we bring communities with us when we do.
And how we ensure the conversation is grounded in trust, not distortion.
