Building cyber safe mindsets and behaviours
The challenge
A large corporate organisation was making changes to strengthen its cyber security posture.
Approach
SenateSHJ was engaged to develop a culture change program to help people shift their mindsets and behaviours – focused on prevention and compliance with new policies and practices.
We developed an approach that allowed us to gauge the current security culture and identify gaps and hot button issues to address. Then we created an overarching change framework and narrative to communicate with and engage the business throughout the change process. This involved interviews and workshops with the leadership team, key stakeholders and representatives from across the business.
The change framework used a model which helps to create a ‘social movement’ within an organisation to drive long-term attitude and behavioural change. For this program, we set the roadmap to create a ‘security movement’, generating participation and ownership through a focus on ‘real stories’ from staff and large-scale campaigns to drive broader awareness of security.
Outcome
We worked with the organisation to implement the framework. Feedback indicated the campaign was proving successful – leaders had maintained the mechanisms to encourage organic discussions about security, leading to a stronger security mindset – a particularly valuable change given the heightened cyber risk organisations face.

The culture change program was critical to help staff connect individual changes in security settings to the bigger picture. It helped them understand ‘the why’ and take ownership of their role in creating a cyber safe organisation.
